Hospital Precincts

Hospital footpaths need to cater to a wide range of users with varying mobility levels. This includes patients who may be using wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, or who have limited stamin.

Uneven surfaces like cracks, bumps, or changes in elevation can pose a safety hazard for people with mobility limitations or those using medical equipment.

Staff know the value of and want to give patients the experience of the real word environment, not just the hospital corridor, before the leave the care of the hospital therapist team.

How we do it

  1.  Complete Briometrix footpath assessment.
  2.  Work with therapist to determine the various skills challenges and skill ratings compared to   the footpath terrain (like a race obstacle course).
  3.  Embed the map with key pop out boxs or icons that indicate terrain features and skill level.

The output is the Briometrix Mobility Course Skills Map,  incorporating skills-grading, which communicates to staff and others what areas around the hospital are best suited to their range of patients.

The map provides an accessible guide and effort rating system to assist clients as they develop their wheelchair skills, confidence and independence in community access.   The map also includes landmarks such as the accessible toilet blocks; accessible bus stops; and accessible wharf.

Benefits for Therapists

  • Personalised Treatment Plans: Therapists can leverage the Briometrix map to tailor treatment plans that incorporate accessible walking routes within the hospital grounds. This allows for a more holistic approach to rehabilitation, promoting mobility and confidence in a safe environment.
  • Goal Setting and Monitoring Progress: The map can be used to set realistic wheeling and walking distance goals for patients as they progress through therapy. Tracking their ability to navigate different routes on the map provides a visual representation of improvement and motivates patients to continue their efforts.
